Diane Estrella Having a Giveaway!

BOOK GIVEAWAY~~~Make It Count: 180 Devotions for the School Year by Sue Christian
http://dianeestrella.com/book-giveawaymake-it-count-180-devotions-for-the-school-year-by-sue-christian/

Diane's Review:

This is a wonderful resource for students and teachers alike. I will be incorporating it into my 2012-13 homeschooling curriculum for my children. I love how the days count down from 180 to 1 and it’s an easy way for kids to know how many days of school are left to finish. Each devotion is a half page long and then there is a Bible Scripture at the bottom to meditate on also. I appreciate that there is less reading and more time for thinking. Probing questions or thoughts to ponder are included and then an opportunity for discussion is encouraged. This would make a great back-to-school gift for that special student in your life and it is the perfect size for a book bag or purse. This is a great way to redirect kids from all the distractions that school holds and take even a few precious moments to reflect daily on what is truly important… connecting with God and making each day count.

For anyone that’s interested, the publisher is generously providing a copy of Make It Count: 180 Devotions for the School Year to one lucky reader. Leave a comment below, either through Facebook comments or the regular comment form, and let me know that you would like to have it.

Fearless ~ 5 Stars

Fearless: The Heroic Story of One Navy SEAL's Sacrifice in the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden and the Unwavering Devotion of the Woman Who Loved HimFearless: The Heroic Story of One Navy SEAL's Sacrifice in the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden and the Unwavering Devotion of the Woman Who Loved Him by Eric Blehm
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book will blow your socks off! I was sent this book to read and my 17yr old son who is considering a career in the military, snagged it and started reading it while I was finishing another book. He said it was pretty good but started kind of slow and read like a documentuary, but he wasn't very far into the book yet.
Now for my take...I agree a bit with the documentary and kind of slow beginning. I was surprised that it went so far back into history. But once the story got moving, while there was a lot off technical info and a ton of acronyms, the story of Adams life, determination, never quit and keep on keepin' on attitude in every aspect of his life is inspiring and uplifting! NOTE: I will state that while this is an inspiring book about a Hero who trusted God, this is a graffiti story and the author did not hold back in telling it word for word the way the SEAL's told it to him. So there is plenty of curse words and drinking, etc. As such I would not recommend this book for young children. As for older teens like my 17yr old who are considering a career in the military...a must read in my mind!

GUEST REVIEWER!!

I would like to introduce everyone to one of my sisters! Mrs. Sandra Lassiter is a Pastor's Wife from Blackhawk, South Dakota where she is a stay at home wife & mother of four beautiful girls. She home schools the oldest three and like me (our whole family in fact)is a bookaholic!
Sandra is the one who first introduced me to Dee Henderson's books about 8 years ago. We had just moved from Alaska to KY/TN for two years and when we first got there Sandra had the complete O'Malley series and after having been in a van with my Husband a 7yr old, 3yr old and a 2 yr old for 10 days straight, I was ready for some down time and a mental break. I read pretty much non-stop through the series and fell in love!!
So last week when I signed up for an ARC (Advanced Reader's Copy)of Dee's new book coming out in October, I instantly contacted Sandra and she signed up for one also. She got her copy yesterday!!! I am in Alaska and haven't gotten mine yet. :( Since she is the one who introduced me to Dee's books to begin with I thought it fitting that she be my Guest Reviewer and give you all a preview glimpse of what she thought of Dee's new book! So here is her review, enjoy...

I am a die-hard Dee Henderson fan, so I was dying to read this book ever since I got the first letter months ago saying she was publishing a new book this Fall. I was lucky enough to be given an Advanced Reader Copy. I received it in the mail yesterday and finished it late last night.  Yep, I couldn't put it down!  First of all, I loved the book."Midwest Homicide Investigator Ann Silver seemingly appears out of nowhere and drops the best lead on a serial murder case that Special Agent Paul Falcon has had in years. But she leaves him with more than just good evidence--he also has a strong desire to get to know this clever cop better. Is he prepared for both the case's and her secrets?"
It will be hard to write this review and not include spoilers.  If I included spoilers, my sister (the author of this blog) would kill me!! Click Me!  The book is well written with more than one twist. I'll admit that one of them was kind of an obvious no-brainer. Some of the others caught me off guard and I love that. However, there were a couple of things that dropped it down to a 4 star book instead of 5.  Unfortunately, I can't really go into the reasons without spoilers.  There was one little strand of the story line that didn't work well for me, but is more of a personal preference.  The other one is pretty big.  The way the female lead's character is described throughout the book, to me really doesn't fit something towards the end.  In fact, that part really turned me off her.  To me what she said/did was beyond ridiculous and made me somewhat dislike her character.  [If you want to read my full review on GoodReads, I go into much more detail.  You might want to wait until you've read the book, though.]
All that being said, the book had a great story line and was well written. I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for her next book--I just hope she has a better female character next time.

Journey to Riverbend ~ 4 Stars

Journey to RiverbendJourney to Riverbend by Henry McLaughlin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was the first book I have read by Henry McLaughlin. It was a very interesting book. It was not at all what I would have expected from a male author. I was pretty amazed at how he was able to get into the heart and mind of the female character and what she was thinking and feeling!
He did even a better job of expressing her thoughts from this perspective than a lot of female authors I have read over the years.
While there is violence and unsavory things that are dealt with in this book. Henry does it in a very Christian way that is not offensive but doesn't dance around the subject. I do wish that he had finished up on the story line of the main guy's guilt over his father and let him settle that issue by finding out what had happened after he left, one way or the other. I hate when a very important part of a story line that is mentioned so very many times, never gets an answer by the end and I'm left hanging.
But other than that. I really liked this book and will be keeping my eyes open for more books by Henry McLaughlin!

End of the Trail ~ 5 Stars

End of the TrailEnd of the Trail by Vickie McDonough
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was very interested in reading this series. I am tickled to have won the first one! The concept of a series where each book is written by a different author intrigues me very much!
I liked this book a lot. It had drama, mystery, love at first sight, answers to long hidden secretes...
This was a good book. Very well written. Vickie did a good job of mixing in serious subjects with humour and joy. Trouble and mystery with love and hearts searching and trusting in God.
I am anxious to read book two of this series and see where the next author takes it!
I won this book from the Book Club Network and this is my own opinion of the book.

4 Stars for Stardust!!

StardustStardust by Carla Stewart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was from an era that I love reading about but don't often find books written during. I love the "Ozzie & Harriett" time when Ladies dressed like ladies and men acted like Gentlemen! Where families were real and spent time together. Had picnics and played ball, went for walks, Sunday drives and Drive in Movies!
This book is from that time...but tells one of the sides of that time that was a hidden and "taboo" part of that time. I don't want to give away the story but Carla does a wonderful job of writing about a part of the period that was very real and sad. Yet very resilient! I love her characters!! She does such a wonderful job of making everyone come to life and come right off the page! I just wanted to meet Luli and could almost reach out and touch each of the children!
A wonderful book about not perfect people who learn to live with each other and what God has given them!

Accused ~ 4 Stars

AccusedAccused by Janice Cantore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was uniquely different than what I had expected and am used to. The main character was the "good gal" as was to be expected and yet she wasn't because she was running as hard and fast from God as she could! She wanted nothing to do with God or anyone who had anything to do with Him!
It takes a lot for this stubborn cop to see that she even needs to start accepting that there might in fact be a God and start asking Him to show Himself to her! Tough Gal!
The story line it's self is very good in my opinion. It is a very entwined story with a lot of corruption that runs thick and deep. You never know who to trust 100%.
The one part I found hard to believe was the bullet in the hip bone and the complete recovery. Just because of my own health issues I know what damage to bones can do and how it can and does effect you for the rest of your life. That kind of shot to that bone would have ended a carrier in the field, putting him behind a desk if not medically retired with a hip replacement.
Nicely written, and true to life that not EVERY bad guy got caught and not every good guy came through unscathed.

There is Hope ~ 4 Stars

The Hope of ShridulaThe Hope of Shridula by Kay Marshall Strom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book helped me understand more about what has been going on in India in the politics and fighting and all the news, history and everything else combined. Kay has a way of putting her characters into the opposing sides while right under the same roof so that they discuss and argue it and help you see all the sides of it!
And all the while the main character is the lowest "caste" of them all not seen or heard, watching and listening and learning it all. Being and becoming smarter than them all!
The very abrupt ending drove me crazy!! It left everyone in the whole book hanging in limbo. No one finished anything...there was no answers or closer at all. I CAN'T wait for the next one!! From what I have read it starts years and years later but I hope it answers and settles some of the stories! I am on tender hooks waiting! It is like the Season Ending of a TV series and you have to wait for the next Season to find out what happened!! LOL I HAVE TO GET MY HANDS ON THE NEXT BOOK!!!
This book was supplied through the Abington Press website for me to review and give my honest opinion.

HACKED!!

WOW!! I have heard of being hacked before but today beats everything I have ever seen!! It is 11:30pm and I am still trying to recover! Someone from China hacked my main aujus1969 yahoo account that I have had for over 13 years last night. They started at about 1:45am and by 6:30am they had deleted 13years of emails and info off of that account as well as ALL of my contacts (GONE). Sent emails and face book notes asking for money in my name to all my friends family and coworkers!! Yes, they Hacked my Facebook, my Blogs, Three email accounts, everything while I was sleeping! I woke up to a nightmare!! I have lost so much information that it is going to be hard to repair and recover as far as this blog goes. I had all my books that I receive lined up and starred in order so that as I read them all the contact info was right there for the reviews....it's all gone!! I will be doing some scrambling to get everyone right and keep it all straight. So if I miss a book or you don't see your book showing up in a timely manner please feel free to send me an email and remind me!! Yahoo is working with me to help recover as much old information as they can find. But these hackers went into my saved files and just randomly deleted whole files of information!! I created a new email that I will be starting to use as a business email for all things books (I love the sound of that!!)So from now on anyone wanting to reach me from this site can start switching over to CabinFeverReading@gmail.com I will still have the aujus account for family and personal use. I ampped up my security...so I won't miss any emails during the switch-over but that will be my new business email. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused anyone. The Memory ~ New Author for Me!

The MemoryThe Memory by Barbara Kaylor
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was a sweet little Christian Romance Novel! I had never read anything by Barbara Kaylor before and she did a very good job on her descriptions of people and places.
I think with more experience will come more filling out of the details that draw us in a little more to the rooms and the aroma's, etc.
But I did like the story even though it is hard to believe a man could be that hard headed...I've known some hard headed men but this guy takes the cake!
A good fun read.

In Pursuit of 4 Stars!

Relentless Pursuit: A Novel (Secrets of Roux River Bayou, #3)Relentless Pursuit: A Novel by Kathy Herman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed revisiting the characters from this series again! I had read book one as an ebook and enjoyed it very much. So I was thrilled when I was picked by Kathy Herman in a book give away as a winner for book three!
Now I just have to get my haves on #2 to fill in the blanks.
But I have really enjoyed this series that has combined mystery, food, Louisianan ambiance, & learning to forgive along with huge doses of Grace & "build your own" family!

Time to Grieve ~ 5 Stars

It's My Time to Grieve: A Journey Into Grief and BackIt's My Time to Grieve: A Journey Into Grief and Back by Phoebe Leggett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An amazing, soul baring, honest, horrifying and yet helpful & needed book!
I won this book from a drawing from the Book Club Network and got it in the mail almost a week and a half ago...I tried but couldn't read it. I started it but only got to chapter 2 and put it down... This is not like me at all. When I read, I read.
I thought maybe it was hitting a little too close to home & the idea terrified me! My son is 17, named Mathew and drives with a bit of a lead foot and far too much confidence. And that scares me!
So I felt guilty but I moved it down in my stack of "too read" books...until today. Two days ago my 18yr. old niece was killed in a car accident. She had just had her birthday EXACTLY 2 months before.
The family lives in TN...I am bed ridden and live in Alaska. I will not be able to be there for my family nor they for me.
Reading this book tonight was just what I needed. My life has been a life of loss in many ways.
So, Phoebe, God knew I needed this book and He knew WHEN I needed it! Thank you for picking my name and for being faithful to share your heart in writing this book!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who has lost someone they love! I think this book should be in every home library!

Sand Dollar - 4 Stars

Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying LoveSand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love by Sebastian Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is a captivating and mesmerizing read! I received it in the mail this afternoon and read it straight through without stopping!
I will tell you up front that I took off a star because of two main issues; the first and biggest for me was the cursing and yelling at God. I am a Christian and I can't stand when someone (no matter how bad things are) yells, screams and cusses at God. Yes he suffered some consequences (I won't give away the book) but it made me cringe). Also there was sooo very much cussing period and in addition to that the over descriptiveness of the sex was a bit much for me. Now let me finish...I'm not talking about acknowledging and dealing with the facts of abuse and rape, these things need to be dealt with and Sebastian dealt with that part of the issues very well!
Nor am I referring to the psychiatrist (PS: LOVED HOW THAT PART ENDED!!!) Because of these things and the intense issues I would have to rate a movie made from this book as R or NC17.

That being said: THE WRITING STORY EXECUTION, CAPTIVATION, TENDERNESS, LEARNING, GIVING, HOPE & UNDYING LOVE!!! THESE ARE ACHINGLY AND HEARTRENDINGLY WELL WRITTEN! I SOOO VERY MUCH WANT THE REAL STORY TO END AS WELL IF NOT BETTER! I AM WISHING THE VERY BEST FOR THE REAL PEOPLE THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN ABOUT!

June 28th: Found out that I was one of the winners in the drawing for this book! I am very excited and can't wait to start reading it! Thank you for choosing me!
June 30th: First let me start by thanking Sebastian for sending me this beautiful book and autographing it for me! He also sent me a handwritten card, a beautiful bookmark...and the book arrived first class 2 days after I was notified by Goodreads and Sebastian that I had won! Now that is service and a giving heart!

Beloved Counterfeit ~ Not a fake ~ 5 Stars

Beloved CounterfeitBeloved Counterfeit by Kathleen Y'Barbo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved reading a book about the ocean! Ad to that redemption, forgiveness, pirates...It has a bit of everything!
A lovely story of no matter how bad your life had been, what horrible things you have done or have been done to you...God's love, grace and forgiveness are complete! Do they keep you from ever having another bad day or more trials and troubles in your life? NO, but when you do...He is there to comfort you and see you through them.
He can take a life of used and abused and turn it into a work of beauty & grace for His honor & glory.
A heart wrenchingly beautiful story.

Girl's Still Got It ~ 4 stars

The Girl's Still Got It: Take a Walk with Ruth and the God Who Rocked Her WorldThe Girl's Still Got It: Take a Walk with Ruth and the God Who Rocked Her World by Liz Curtis Higgs
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A very unique book! I have never read one written like this before. It is part story, part lesson plan, devotional...it is very interesting how she takes each PART of every verse and breaks it down. That part was easy for me to follow because that is the way my Dad preaches most of the time, verse by verse, breaking each one down into parts to explain it.
I loved the history, the laughter, the realness of the book.
I did get lost in the usage of so many Bible "translations". Often it felt like it was just more words.
The one problem I had was that Liz kept repeating that the KJV is closest to the original Hebrew but... so why not just use the KJV and if more explanation of a word is needed then use dictionaries and a thesaurus? Instead, some people might finish the book confused on what to read (that is just my opinion on that point). My point is that when you keep using several different versions a person who is insecure or untrained is left not knowing what to read or where to start.
Other than that...I LOVED this book! Once I got past the confusion of bouncing from version to version, this book opened up a whole world of my life that I was so confused about and explained some things I had misunderstood about myself, my past and what God could do for and with me for years!!
This is not a Novel, but it is a good book! I recommend it!

No False Pretenses about 4 Stars!

False Pretenses: A NovelFalse Pretenses: A Novel by Kathy Herman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great novel of Louisiana! It has history, Cajuns, living a lie, being caught and the consequences of living a lie. It also has a wonderful Cajun diner, old houses and building in Louisiana, drug dealers, murderers, racial tensions and riots!
But it also has God's Grace, His safety and security in time of trouble and His reconciliation!
I recommend it as a good mystery. I am looking forward to the next two in the series!!

"Medicus" only 2 stars

Medicus (Gaius Petreius Ruso, #1)Medicus by Ruth Downie
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The first word that comes to mind ~ CONFUSION. There seems no real point to this story, other than slavery, breaking laws, skipping work, prostitution, crooked trading trying to one up each other without getting themselves or someone else killed....
While these are all facts and a part of the times this book makes it seem to be ALL there was at the time. NO GOOD THING. This book seemed to have no true point or reason. No end point where someone was rescued, something made better, people made happier...it just ends. I found it disappointing.

Wedded to War - a Good Read!

Wedded to War (Heroines Behind the Line, #1)Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a civil war novel unlike your normal civil war books. This has a lot of past history in it that deals with the beginning of nursing in our nation. It is amazing what some of the women in our country had to decide, endure and stand up against just to be allowed to nurse our men during war. Everyone knows about F. Nightingale but what some of the women from the North and South went through was eye opening!
This book deals with hospital ships, immigrants, slime-ball men (haven't there always been creeps who pass themselves off as upper class?)...and the promise of a happy ending!

I loved the picture on the cover when I first saw it and I of course expected something extraordinary knowing it was written by Siri. She is such an extraordinary author. I have yet to be disappointed in any of her books I have read and this one is by far the best up to this point!
I would love to go on and on about this book and give details about this book, but I think it is better to to let you read it for yourself! It is worth it!

Rubies Harvest's 5 Stars!

Harvest of RubiesHarvest of Rubies by Tessa Afshar
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Won from MP News Room
Of all of Tessa's books that I have read so far this one is the one that seems the least "Bible".
Let me explains what I mean by that. I love how Tessa writes about Characters from Bible times and brings them to life in a new, real and personal way. She ties History, Personalities from Bible stories and Places together and makes them come alive, giving us an overall picture of the time, place and story.
But this is the first one I have read that had so little to do with an actual part or story from the Bible that I could go back and read and say "Ah, That makes that come alive or Wow that make it so clear or ties it together for me!
Other than the fact that her cousin was Nehemiah and both were in King Artaxerxes' court, that was all the "traceable" part of the Bible I could find.
NOW~that being said...As a book about Bible TIMES with a clear story of God's Love, Direction, and Work in Sarah's life, this is a beautiful story! I loved it! It is on my 5 Star shelf here at home and will be read many times I am sure!

When the Smoke ClearsWhen the Smoke Clears by Lynette Eason
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am very so very much enjoying Lynette's books in this genre! She is very good at keeping you guessing with so very many possible suspects that just when you think you KNOW - you realize you are wrong!
I did figure out the one "bad" person eventually but I HATED that the book was left hanging unfinished! That part drives me nuts!
So now I have to wait for the next book in the series...If this one had finished and stood on it's own it would have been a 5 star book all the way!
I do highly recommend this book. I just can't wait till I can can get hold of the next one to read!

Yesterday's StardustYesterday's Stardust by Becky Melby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Thank you! I can't wait to read it!! June 15th - I received it! Delivered to my front door today! Thank you very much!
This was a different type of then and now book. I liked it. I liked that the story got down to the level of dealing with the gangs on the streets, the mob, teens on the streets, etc. in a real way, not a perfect way where everyone and everything turns out perfect.
Yes it has a happy ending but there is a lot of painful lessons learned and things that do go wrong in the many years between the beginning of the diary and the end of the final story.
I enjoyed reading this book.

Stay Away From ~ "Michal's Window"

Michal's WindowMichal's Window by Rachelle Ayala
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

This book really upset me. I felt like it took a story from God's Word and made it into as trashy of a novel as could be conceived! I was sick to my stomach and could not finish the book. I felt, for myself that it wasn't fit to read. I am sorry if that offends or upsets anyone. But it is the way I feel. I downloaded it for free off of the internet onto my Kindle and am very sorry that I did. If you are a Christian who believes in God's Word and what is right and good and pure, don't bother reading this book!
